A VPN stands for virtual private network. It's purpose is to create a connection between your computer and another network securely, e.g. connecting to a work network.

The main use of a VPN has been for employees to connect to their work network, this allows them to access specific work data, such as Outlook Exchange, or local intranet sites.

However lately people have been using VPNs for extra security. Using a VPN provides the following benefits:

  1. An encrypted connection is made between your computer and the network hence the data cannot be seen.
  2. Your computer's IP address is changed by the server hence regional locked data can be accessed.
